Renovation & Expansion of the Emergency Department at SHN’s Centenary Hospital

Project overview

We have been awarded the Schematic and Design Development stages for the renovation and expansion of the Emergency Department at Scarborough Health Network’s Centenary Hospital. This important redevelopment initiative will provide much needed upgrades to Centenary’s existing department, located just outside of Toronto, which is no longer capable of meeting the community’s growing healthcare needs due to limitations of layout and size.

The Hospital has projected its number of emergency department annual visits to increase from 68,200 to 77,600 by 2026-27. The revamped and expanded department will thus provide Centenary with a new facility configured to current standards of design, capable of meeting current demand and future growth.

Renovation & expansion details:

The proposed redevelopment of Centenary’s emergency department will see renovations to 27,000 sf of existing space coupled with a new 24,000 sf addition, doubling its current size. The added space will allow for the expansion of the Emergency Department, the Fracture Clinic, and the Cardiac Diagnostic and Arrhythmia Clinics. The existing footprint of the three components will be fully renovated to accommodate the new proposed layout. To support and enable the new building expansion, the project also includes:

– 26 additional treatment stations, including 9 airborne isolation rooms, which the department currently lacks

– 6,000 sq.ft. mechanical/electrical penthouse located on the second floor of the building addition

– Reconfiguration of a portion of Neilson Rd, which is part of the “ring road” around the hospital site

– Enhancements to the surrounding landscape, roads and parking

– A new three-level parking structure to accommodate 240 parking stalls (replacement and new capacity).

Due to the nature of the hospital departments involved, the project will utilize a phased approach to construction, to ensure SHN can continue to safely deliver uninterrupted patient care – safely.

The revamped Emergency Department anticipates admitting patients by Winter 2025, and carries an estimated capital construction budget of $62 M.
