The Esquimalt Graving Dock (EGD) is a Government of Canada owned site that provides ship repair facilities for tenants. The client needed a new master plan to increase operational capacity to meet future service demands. We defined a complex program of critical time-sensitive operations. We then carefully placed the project components within challenging site with restricted plannable area, a significant elevation change, challenging soil conditions, protected habitats and sensitive archeological areas. The master plan considers the best use of land, placing right-sized facilities to achieve ideal adjacencies and workflows while preserving the culturally and environmentally sensitive site features. It provides the long-term framework for renewal and outlines sustainability targets to address climate resiliency, energy and carbon and holistic sustainability.
